Do any of the air cleaners you are considering produce additional pollutants or re-disperse those it has removed back into the air? Consider if any claim to be able to remove all odors and if there are any cases of complaint that the cleaner you have in mind has ever soiled wall and other surfaces.

Be sure that the installation of the air cleaner you choose is simplistic and that you can complete the process correctly without questions. Of course, you’ll want to comparison shop, looking at different models to contrast their efficiency levels, volume capacity, and especially price. However, the initial cost is not the only price you should be concerned with, as all air cleaners need regular maintenance to keep up a good functionality. If heavy or expensive maintenance is required, it may not be worth the sale price.

Once an air filter catches and removes polluting particles from the air, they should be trapped and not redistributed by the device. What good does it do to remove a harmful substance from our air source if it’s going to get kicked right back into it? Imagine all the garbage in the air that we are forced to breathe in from industrial processes, smog, car pollution, aerosols, etc, then processing all that in our overworked lungs, and breathe back out to the environment again, is there any chance we can find a moment’s solace with clean, fresh, and healthy air the way mother nature intended it to be? Not unless you lived on a deserted island.

I don’t know about you, but with the rate of pay from my job I don’t think I will be purchasing my own island any time soon. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to breathe clean air, much like I drink clean bottled spring water at the drop of a dime. If you think about it, those two things are quite common in our everyday lives and are required for functioning and health reasons. Bottled water has pretty much provided us with an alternative way to have clean pure water. Shouldn’t air purifiers also be considered a must have in our polluted environment? Not convinced?

Here is a quick run down on 5 categories of pollution that is common in the typical household alone:

1. Odor. This comes from food, animals, body odor, cigarettes, stinky sneakers, clothing, equipment, and others.

2. Particulate. On a nice sunny day, you pull up your shades and are just about ready to take a big whiff of fresh air, but you notice little particles everywhere visible via the suns rays and you stop yourself in your tracks. Those are particulates and to the naked eye one cannot see that it consists of many things including dust, dust mites, dust mite fecal matter, animal dander, skin flakes, pollen, smoke, and allergens.

3. Microbials. These include bacteria, fungi, mycotoxins, midew, viruses, and mold spores.

4. Chemical Fumes. Benzene and formaldehyde are two examples, these fumes are persistently seeping from carpets, upholstery, draperies, furniture, cleaning products, beauty products including nail polish and polish removers. Additionally fumes can be found in cigarette, pipe and cigar smoke, as well as from the building construction of your home or apartment. Many of such chemicals have been identified as carcinogenic (cancer causing).

5. Radon Gas: Second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is for all intents and purposes invisible to the naked eye, nose, and what have you. Radon is enhanced by smoking.

Now that you have some knowledge of the pollution that is inescapable in our daily lives, it is perhaps time to treat clean air as vitally important as clean water.

People use air purifiers in the home and office to screen pollutants and contaminants out of the air. But just what are these pollutants, and why should they matter to you?

Bacteria: Airborne bacteria can be a problem, to say the least. Such diseases as tetanus, typhoid fever, pneumonia, syphilis, cholera, leprosy, and tuberculosis are all the nasty products of these airborne pathogens. Lucky for us, not all bacteria are this vicious; there's also 'friendly bacteria', which if it's any help to you at all is living some place private, like your pancreas, out of reach of an air purifier.

Mold spores: Mold is a fungus just like mushrooms. Mold reproduces itself through spores, which fly around in the air and aggravate your allergies. Some molds are toxic when inhaled. Black mold, which can grow on food, can produce the serious lung disease aspergillosis if large quantities are inhaled. The more times the air passes through the HEPA filter, the cleaner the air becomes. The room capacity of a HEPA air purifier will determine whether the air cleaner can handle your air purifying needs. Electret filters in air purifiers use synthetic fibers that create static charges to attract particles. Electret filters are offered in a variety of types including plain, pleated, disposable or reusable. Some brands like Blueair combine the HEPA technology with their own electrostatic media filter technology, which charges the incoming particles instead of the filter. By marrying the two unique purification systems together, Blueair created a more effective air cleaner.

Negative ion generators or ionic air purifiers use tiny, charged wires or needles to create gas molecules with negative charges or ions that adhere to the airborne particles and collect in the filter. However, many ions end up back in the air, sticking to furnishings and other surfaces that may be stained by them.

Ionic air purifiers only remove certain types of particles and aren’t always effective against gases, chemicals, or odors. Some ionic air purifiers have been shown to re-circulate the same dirty particles that they draw in, making them much less effective than traditional air purifiers using HEPA filtration.

Instead of using filters to trap particles, ozone generators use high voltage electrical currents to convert oxygen to ozone, which acts as a powerful oxidant and breaks down molecules and microorganisms in the air. Several tests have proved that ozone generators are not very effective at removing indoor allergens.

Ozone, in fact, can be hazardous to your health, and both ozone generators and ionic air cleaners emit ozone. In nature, lightning creates ozone when it cuts through oxygen molecules in the air. In the atmosphere, ozone helps protect us from harmful UV rays; however, on the ground level, ozone is a powerful lung irritant. When created artificially, ozone can actually aggravate allergies and asthma, damaging the lining of nasal passages and lungs, causing coughing, throat irritation, chest pain, and shortness of breath. The Environmental Protection Agency and the American Lung Association advise against using ozone generators.

Astounding as it may sound, over 50% of all illnesses are either caused or aggravated by indoor air pollution. Both organic and inorganic contaminants can be held responsible for this. Among the organic contaminants present in air there are bacteria, viruses, fungi, mold, etc. These can cause severe health hazards like asthma, headache, respiratory allergies, sinusitis, fibromyalgia, aspergillosis etc.

Till recently it was believed that HEPA purifiers are good enough to tackle the problem. Any HEPA purifier has the ability to trap contaminants of the size of 0.3 microns and above. Though such filtration takes care of a lot of contaminants, there are still a significant number of contaminants which still need to be dealt with. But they being less than 0.3 microns in size, are not trapped by the HEPA purifier.

The recent innovation has been ultraviolet air purifier. These come either in conjunction with HEPA purifiers or as stand alone machines. The ultraviolet air purifiers work on a totally different concept. Studies have shown that UV rays are effective in dealing with microorganisms of size even less than 0.3 microns in size.

An UV air purifier actually doesn’t kill the organism. Instead the rays just alter the DNA and RNA profile of the organisms. This makes them sterile so that they in a way become harmless. With no option of reproducing they can hardly cause any damage. So even if virus and bacteria do enter our respiratory tract they hardly get a chance to grow there.

However, there have been issues of contention with UV air purifiers too. One allegation is that the UV rays hardly get any time to act on the contaminants. It is documented that ultraviolet is effective on allergens but only under certain conditions. Ultraviolet light can alter the DNA and RNA profiles of the allergens only after they are exposed to the light for a considerable period of time. The dosage or concentration of light on the contaminants is also crucial. Skeptics claim that within an air purifier, the ultraviolet light doesn’t get enough time to act. Since a fan is always working the organisms never settle down. With the contaminants unsteady the UV rays cannot work on them.

This may be true, but only partially, as ultraviolet will manage to make some impact on the pollutants. However, there might be those lucky few, who will be able to escape.

Sure, it sounds hard. How do you know if an air purifier is really the appliance you need? It's actually quite simple. Look around your house. Do you fight mildew battles from time to time? Is dusting a daily routine? Do your windows steam up frequently when you cook or when the shower has been on? Do you have mushrooms growing in your basement despite your use of a dehumidifier?

These are all critical warning signs.

Radon Is Another Issue

You should start by contacting the state. They have many brochures on air purifier systems. They also offer free radon test kits. In six months time, you will know if you are at risk for radon. Once you know for sure, you will know how much of an air purifier system you need to purchase. Once you know, an air purifier should be your next step. You may just need an air purifier for mold and mildew spores. You also might be one of the few who need something capable of removing radon as well. Either way, your health is worth it!
